Upcycle Revolution!

Recycled plastic totes… from Africa with Love! Joy Recycling got its start as a means to create opportunities for women in Jos, Nigeria and beyond. We expertly weave recycled plastic bags into stylish totes, using plarn (“plastic yarn”) – tiny strips cut from plastic bags.

We were founded by Joy Gigin under the auspices of WONEV, Women in Neighborhood.

When Joy originally learned these techniques she not only began producing them herself, she taught others locally in Nigeria. Then she continued to pay this knowledge forward by teaching women and girls in South Sudan, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso and Kenya.

Our Karma Chart gives you an idea of all the plastic you're upcycling. It can take our weavers from two days to two weeks to produce one bag. But it's certainly worth it.

Plastic bag totes have the advantage of being strong, roomy and waterproof. They're perfect for school, shopping, trips to the beach, the gym or the yoga studio.

Upcycle Revolution!

One of the first things you'll notice is the tightness of the weave. Not surprisingly, a continent known for its baskets, produces artisans who can weave tightly.

Each bag is lined and zippered, with uniquely woven charms.

Some bags even feature a braided weave, which recycles even more plastic bags into an incredibly strong tote.

We are so excited to bring you these bags to continue to pay the upcycled love forward.
