African and African-inspired fashion are on catwalks in New York, Lagos, Paris, LA, Kampala, London, etc. Bold patterns and explosions of color are trending to define a new modern chic. iamISIGO is a brand that delves beyond the surface, pattern and print to the underlying form and impression of African precedents. The iamISIGO TABOO collection understands, refines and celebrates the underlying design elements of traditional Wodaabe apparel. It is a study in form and color and takes inspiration from the soft, draped, protective form prevalent in Wodaabe fashion.

The Wodaabe value beauty, allure and sexual liberty; thus the tag “People of the Taboo.” These values are literally on display during the Gerewol Festival, a week-long “beauty pageant” where young Wodaabe men, with elaborate make-up, perform the Yaake dance and songs to impress and be judged by young women. But underlying that which is visible, are strong Wodaabe codes of modesty (semteende), patience and fortitude (munyal), care and fore-thought (hakkilo) and loyalty (amana).

“The collection plays with a range of colors; navy blue, beige, indigo, army green and black. The fabrics range from crinkled taffeta with elastane, knitted metallic fibres, tape lace, needle lace and Gabardine to create ponchos, skousers, skorts, bomber jackets and strapless pieces. Without compromising on the quirk of the variety of skousers and skorts, there is a play with androgyny, while the black lace ponchos take after the dark harmattan night of the nomadic lands. The strapless pieces describe the fluidity of the Wodaabe women and their sexuality while the crops and bomber jackets reflect the coolness of living in the Sahel and the soft breeze that sifts through the sands.” - iamISIGO

“Established in 2009, and starting off as a small independent company based in Ghana and Nigeria, iamISIGO seeks to create a striking awareness of how African culture can be fused with an audacious but yet minimal design aesthetic.” - iamISIGO
